This is it. My old (2004 model) HP tc4400 hybrid PC resurrected with 64GB SSD solid drive with Ubuntu 11.10 Unity on board. It is hybrid, since it can be used both as conventional laptop as well as tablet with on-screen WACOM pen. You might guess it is neither the perfect laptop nor tablet as far as usability goes. Yet, instead of buying a brand new tablet (ala iPad) this 10.5″ beauty is more than capable in 2012 context.

Did I face issues deploying Ubuntu 11.10 on it? Yes
Was it worth it? Absolutely, so far Unity is sweet.

So what was it? … Upon successful installation of Ubuntu adn after first reboot I was greeted with the following message from GRUB (the default boot loader): “out of disk”

After some initial googling the only trait i got was coming from the following post:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1331730&page=3

The hint that it was happening mainly on old HP laptop was pointing clearly to my case. At first I felt a bit disheartened thinking it must be some old BIOS version issue with my PATA SSD drive, considering the fact the last official BIOS update for tc4400 was dated back 2007, when SSD were not around. However, the hint about creating separate boot partition seemed promising and gave it a try.

I tried researching what file system is best for SSD MMC drives, leading to better performance and increased lifespan. Then I stumbled upon the following blog post :
http://robert.penz.name/137/no-swap-partition-journaling-filesystem-on-a-ssd/
,which was revelating to say the least and really bust the myth about the SSDs lifespan.

Finally I ended up configuring my system with the partition schema from this post: http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2010/05/26/manual-disk-partitioning-guide-for-linux-mint-9-and-ubuntu-10-04/2/

Then after new install I was greeted with the old error message plus two more. Yet this time the Unity login screen popped and everything seems to work perfect and I really mean it. Every small detail, like special laptop keys etc. work just fine and the WACOM tablet too. Due to my archaic Intel video card (Intel suck on video, big time) I was forced to switch from Unity3D to Unity2D, which made my GUI experience smooth and responsive.

Cya.

I recently got into Nokia Symbian development to help my bro on a mobile side project of his. I volunteered for Nokia mainly because I could use my beginner Qt experience developing for mobile, which was exciting enough.

Unfortunately, I’ve just realized the latest Qt SDK 1.1.4 is not even supporting the old Symbian devices anymore. On top of that it is extremely hard to find and download the older 1.1.2. GOOD JOB NOKIA, you suck!

So here is the link to Qt SDK 1.1.2 (Targeting the Symbian s60 devices) http://get.qt.nokia.com/qtsdk/Qt_SDK_Win_offline_v1_1_2_en.exe

Please keep in mind that different SDK versions will not mix well together, according to Nokia! But anyway here is the link to ALL SDKs & Platfroms (accessible @nokia.com) http://get.qt.nokia.com/qtsdk/

Amazon came out with their newest line of Kindle ebook readers today,
including the appropriately named “Kindle Fire”.

To quote their TV commercial: “The instruction we find in books is
like fire. We fetch it from our neighbours, kindle it at home,
communicate it to others, and it becomes the property of all.”

This device does not kindle that fire — it extinguishes it, with more
of the same digital restrictions.

Let’s look at the facts:

Amazon claims you have no right to sell or share the books youbuy. They advertise a “lending” feature which, at best, allows you to lend a book one time *ever*, to one person, who must also be a Kindle user. You don’t get to make the decision about whether you can lend a book or not — the publisher and Amazon do. That’s not sharing.

In fact, when people tried to cooperate to make large-scale use of the lending function, Amazon shut them down. The most prominent example of this was the web site Lendle, which is back up now, albeit with fewer features, including a feature which made it easy to lend the books you have without typing in all the titles — a move forced on them by Amazon to discourage sharing.

The power exerted over its users, arbitrarily blocking lending of books and remotely removing books, is unacceptable even if they later change their minds or promise to stop doing it.

Amazon is working its way into public libraries and schools now, subverting the functioning of the very places they, in the above quote, claim to support.

Via the wireless connectivity of these devices, Amazon can hold data about everything you read.

Also via the connectivity, Amazon can delete books from Kindles. They have already done this multiple times. They say they won’t do it anymore, but they make users sign an agreement which still gives them the authority to. They have demonstrated only reasons to doubt their word.

Although it is possible to use the Kindle for DRM-free materials,
that is not the system that Amazon is promoting or working most
actively toward. Funding Amazon’s work in this area, even if you use
it differently, is supporting their moves at limiting sharing and
access to books.

The result:

More of the same: A major threat to the shareability –
like fire — that has enabled human culture and knowledge to
advance.**

## Take action! ##

* Send a message to Amazon’s Kindle Team via Twitter — @amazonkindle — be wary of using Twitter directly, as it uses proprietary JavaScript. Using your Twitter account via identi.ca is a good choice.

* Contact Amazon customer services: Chat, phone and email support are available, and ask them to drop DRM from the Kindle.

Alas Adobe
You finally bring Flash 11 to the very minorities, the Linux amd64 users

Besides the fact that an open-source flash alternative exists and it works with significantly better performance the share fact remained that latest version flash sites (a.k.a 9, 10 ) were incompatible with the majority of media sites (vimeo, soundcloud etc.). IN addition there was no HD @tube

So after two post of rands and some mitigation with variety of firefox plugins, here it comes …

source : http://digitizor.com/2011/07/14/install-64-bit-flash-11-ubuntu-11-04/

note : this is only an issue for 64bit (amd64) Linux Desktop machines in general (all distors) since Adobe fervantly was neglecting seemesly marginal user base … argh.. that’s the main reason I support OOS at the first place!

Step 1

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sevenmachines/flash

Step 2

sudo apt-get update

Step 3

sudo apt-get install flashplugin64-installer

These three steps will hook you to external repository. You can find more information on the following two links:

Where is my libgl OpenGL library ?

If you are trying compiling, that is ./configre & make , a game or any other application depending on OpenGL libgl-dev package please make sure you are linking to the appropriate proprietary openGL implementation. In my case ATI proprietary drivers.

A typical game after running the ./configure script :

checking for GL library... no
checking for GL library (with pthreads)... no
checking for MesaGL library... no
checking for MesaGL library (with pthreads)... no
checking for opengl32 library... no
checking for opengl32 library (with pthreads)... no
*** Hmm, you don't seem to have OpenGL libraries installed in the standard
*** location (/usr/lib). I'll check in /usr/X11R6/lib, since
*** many distributions (incorrectly) put OpenGL libs there.
checking for GL library... no
checking for GL library (with pthreads)... no
checking for MesaGL library... no
checking for MesaGL library (with pthreads)... no

The script will most likely look for the opengl libraries in /usr/lib or /usr/X11R6/lib
However, the actual location for the propriatary GL drivers of ATI are : /usr/lib/fglrg
in case of NVDIA carts ….. (todo)

So, a quick solution is to edit the shell script ./configuration file and override with the correct path location of libgl.
A more elegant and permanent solution will be to create soft links from /usr/lib/fglrg to /usr/lib

sudo ln -s /usr/lib /usr/lib/fglrx/*

Architects look at thousands of buildings during their training, and study critiques of those buildings written by masters. In contrast, most software developers only ever get to know a handful of large programs well—usually programs they wrote themselves—and never study the great programs of history. As a result, they repeat one another’s mistakes rather than building on one another’s successes.

This book’s goal is to change that. In it, the authors of twenty-five open source applications explain how their software is structured, and why. What are each program’s major components? How do they interact? And what did their builders learn during their development? In answering these questions, the contributors to this book provide unique insights into how they think.

If you are a junior developer, and want to learn how your more experienced colleagues think, this book is the place to start. If you are an intermediate or senior developer, and want to see how your peers have solved hard design problems, this book can help you too.

…a wonderful book and a wonderful contribution to the industry.
