Dour Festival 20th Anniv., July 2008, Belgium
It was one of the best venues I have ever been to. Four days and four nights, near the Belgium-French border. Impressive lineup combined with impeccable organization. BIG-UP!!!
It was quite a ride, from Utrecht, NL to Saint Ghislain, BE station. Finally, we were dropped with a shuttle at the festival place. It was divided in two main areas camping-sites and the stages, 5 of them!. Although there was nothing on the official schedule for Wednesday night, we were surprised by a welcoming party at the main stage. Most remarkable, however, was the free set-up of a DJ stand with two huge speakers just next door to our camping area. It was in a FARM (cows), just outside of it, yet behind the camp fence line. Solid DnB and Jungle, some people went crazy, the fence was barely upholding. Yet, I decided to keep cool and save energy and vodka for tomorrow.
First day was mostly shopping, waiting on queues in front of local grocery shops. These was no market place exclusive for the festival patrons. It could have saved alot of hustle. Anyway, the first night was the most anticipated one for me. It was High-Contrast, Pendulum, Sub-Focus and the king of the jungle SHY FX. Frankly, i think Pendulum kickedasses, elevated the public and raised the atmosphere high. It was just perfect for DJ Shy FX to follow after. He was too rapidly going over many of his notorious tunes. It was hard to relax, dance and drift. I wished I had some photos from that night, yet I preferred fully enjoying the moment. It was a time when music, people and superb light effects fuse in a perfect harmony. Definitely, something to remember.
Second day. After a wicked DnB night and half a bottle gone, it was time to enjoy the public BBQ service on camp. Everyone could supply raw meat and the designated BBQ crew were taking care for the rest. Of course there was a whole stand of Indian veggie food for U grass … eaters. Second night was the night of the headliners. Ice cube and Wu Tang Clan together on the same stage. No need to say how massive and impressive it was. My favorite IceCube, had a neat performance, mixture of new promo tracks as well as some good old N.W.A. ones. I must not forget to mention Agnostic Front and Life of Agony which were the perfect warm up for me in the late afternoon just before the hip-hop veterans. As a perfect end for the night I enjoyed Ronisize/(REPRAZENT). Yes, the master of jazzy-dnb together with the whole band. Amzing, u can see from the video below, people didn’t stop jumping even in the rain
Third day, tired but still excited. I was short on will and strength to fully enjoy the headline for the night, HATEBREED. I decided to chill-some on the nearest stage, where the Herbalizer was spinning great jazzy beats followed by the technical DJ Krush. Still I have some great footage from Hatebreed, which btw mentioned being only and exclusively for Dour in Europe. I hope they were appreciated. One thing for sure, the med-teams were quite busy after. p0gooooo…
My personal star for the night was the infamous, yet, DJ Aaron Spectre or a.k.a . DRUMCORPS. It is a brilliant mixture of metal and hard core break beat. It has two flavors , dance and dark. Drumcorps is the dark metal like, and I must say I compensated in the POGO department. it was crazy, it was raw, it was everything I like… Altogether, the perfect finish. At least I was finished after
Like in the MasterCard adds, …. 100e ticket, 50e travel cost, 20e bar-jettons … seeing drunken Belgiums … mooo to the COWS and the COWS mooo back, 6 am in the morning while some classical music was creeping out of someone’s tent ….. = PRICELESS … :))
Last day, and the only one with some sun shine. Enjoying some SKA music and even Shisha (Hookapipe). Sweeped the camp in the late afternoon and got ready to cruise back to Holland.
ENJOY! the photos in my Photo Gallery.
